About the Event

2 hours

Join us for an insightful talk and demonstration with Catherine, an expert in the delicate craft of Carrickmacross lace. Catherine will guide you through the fascinating history and intricate techniques of this timeless Irish lace, showcasing how it’s made using fine stitching and appliqué on organdie.

During the session, Catherine will not only explain the origins and evolution of Carrickmacross lace but will also demonstrate the process, offering a rare opportunity to see this beautiful art form in action. Whether you’re a lace enthusiast or new to the craft, this is a wonderful chance to deepen your appreciation of this unique Irish tradition

Carrickmacross lace is believed to have originated in Donaghmoyne, near Carrickmacross, in the 1820s, promoted by Mrs Grey Porter. Inspired by Italian lace, she adapted designs to provide employment for local women.

Carrickmacross lace has been used by designers such as Sybil Connolly and featured in royal wedding dresses, including those of Princess Diana and Kate Middleton. The Carrickmacross Lace Co-Op, founded in 1984, continues to preserve and promote this beautiful tradition.
