Outside the Maria Edgeworth Centre is a grassy area with path and seating and along the walls you can find the Centre Garden. These pages give you details of the plants in that Garden.
Pyracantha is a genus of large, thorny evergreen shrubs in the family Rosaceae, with common names firethorn or pyracantha. They are native to an area extending from Southwest Europe east to Southeast Asia. They resemble and are related to Cotoneaster, but have serrated leaf margins and numerous thorns.
Pyracantha has clusters of small white flowers in June, however, this shrub is grown for it’s glorious display of red or orange berries in the Autumn which are often used in winter flower arrangements and festive wreaths.
Pyracantha belong to the same family as roses. The name comes from the Greek pyr (fire) and akantha (thorn). The thorns are ferocious; long and sharp; you have been warned!
Birds love the berries and will often build their nests in Pyracantha where they are protected from predators by the thorns.
The berries can be made into jellies, jams and sauces. The berries are believed to have antioxidant properties and their extracts are often used in skin care.
Pyracantha can be propagated by sowing seeds under glass in spring or plant cuttings in summer. It will grow in any reasonable garden soil, thrives in sun or partial shade
