Celebrating Heritage Week 2025 at the Maria Edgeworth Centre
Heritage Week 2025 at the Maria Edgeworth Centre in Edgeworthstown was a truly memorable celebration of our town’s rich history. A variety of events throughout the week drew visitors from near and far. They all were eager to explore the stories that make Edgeworthstown so special.
The week kicked off on Saturday 16th August, when the Centre opened its doors free of charge. Guests were immediately captivated by the fascinating artefacts, manuscripts, letters, and books on display. Many commented on the stories behind each item, which brought the town’s history to life in the most vivid way.

On Tuesday 19th August, the Centre hosted a remarkable exhibition featuring photographs and images of Edgeworthstown dating back as far as 1819. Adding an extra dimension to the exhibition, John McGerr premiered a short film he had compiled and edited. The “Visual History of Edgeworthstown” included rare footage from the 1930s by Bernard Noonan. Bernard purchased Edgeworthstown House and estate at the time from the Edgeworth. In addition, later clips from Thomas Walshe in the 1970s and more recent footage by John McGerr were included. Together, these images beautifully showcase how the town has evolved over the decades and serve as a lasting record of our heritage.

Máiread Ní Chonghaile, Longford’s Heritage Officer, officially opened the evening and praised the Centre’s volunteers for their incredible work in preserving and recording our history. Kim Taylor, the town’s new librarian, brought the event to a close with a warm welcome, assuring that she and her team make both locals and visitors feel at home in the library.
John McGerr also thanked Longford County Council Library and Heritage Services and the Heritage Council for their ongoing support, recognising the vital role they play in keeping local heritage alive.

Heritage Week 2025 at the Maria Edgeworth Centre was a wonderful reminder of how our history shapes us and the importance of preserving it. With exhibitions, films, and rare treasures, it was a week that brought the town’s past vividly to life—and left everyone inspired for the future.
