A hidden Gem in Ireland's Hidden Heartlands

During our recent trip through Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, Matt and I discovered a true treasure tucked away in the peaceful countryside of County Westmeath — Fore Distillery. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient ruins, this small-batch distillery captures the spirit of Ireland’s midlands perfectly: authentic, welcoming, and steeped in history.

A Warm Irish Welcome in Fore Distillery

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine hospitality and a passion for craft that immediately set Fore Distillery apart. The team shared their story — how they combine traditional distilling methods with a modern, sustainable approach to create their distinctive small-batch spirits. The scent of malt filled the air as we sampled their smooth Irish Poitín and Rum— each sip reflecting the care and pride that goes into every bottle.

History and Heritage at Fore Abbey

Just a short walk from the distillery stands Fore Abbey, one of Ireland’s most atmospheric monastic sites. Founded in the 7th century by St. Fechin, the abbey is surrounded by the legendary Seven Wonders of Fore — ancient curiosities that continue to fascinate visitors today. The combination of sacred ruins and tranquil countryside creates an unforgettable sense of place.

Scenic Beauty Beyond the Still

No visit to Fore would be complete without exploring the surrounding landscapes. Lough Lene, with its clear blue waters, offers peaceful walking routes and stunning views of the Westmeath countryside. Nearby, the Royal Canal Greenway provides a wonderful way to experience Ireland’s natural beauty on foot or by bike.

If you’re in the mood for a bit more buzz, the lively town of Mullingar is only a short drive away, offering traditional pubs, excellent dining, and plenty of music — a true taste of Irish life.
